Wonderful Mat!
PostedJune 19, 2012
I purchased this 2 months ago--I am a beginner at age 52. I used a cheap mat that tore after 3 uses, and I decided I am definitely sticking to yoga and want to try a rubber mat. I LOVE the grip I get with this mat. I do not slide, and it has really held up well with the 4-5 times/week of using this. I am 5 feet, 7.5 inches tall, and my only wish is that it would be just a bit longer. However, I adjust/scoot where I need to be on the mat. I love the extra padding. Some in the classes have tried my mat out and really liked it--including my instructor!

Does the 8 mm in Uttama premium mat sacrifice balance?

Concerned about the sinking in, but due to arthritis I need extra cushioning ... Please any feedback is appreciated

I have not had trouble balancing. Though it is 8 mm, it is not squishy. I have been doing yoga for 2 months and my ankles started out very wobbly, but they have strengthened. I have not noticed that the mat "gives" as much as I thought an 8-mm mat would. I like its firmness.

If you need extra cushioning, you may consider placing a cheaper thick mat under the rubber mat. That is what my instructor does routinely.

Does this rubber mat have an odor to it?

I am chemically sensitive and purchased a mat that I could not use because of the odor.

The 8mm Gaiam mat does have a bit of odor from the rubber. I don't notice it until my nose is pressed right to it. (No odor when I do the down dog position, for example.) It is not a strong chemical smell, but if you are sensitive, you may want to go another route than the rubber mats. I read while doing online research that the smell decreases. I would say that may be true or maybe I am just getting used to it. I don't notice the smell that much. The mat does NOT smell up my car where I keep the mat rolled in its mesh/zippered tote.

Do you have a yoga sling for the 8mm thick mat?

I would like to order a yoga sling that fits the 8mm thick mat.

Do you have one?

My yoga studio had a $24 zippered mesh/solid tote with sling that fit my 8mm mat well. I just bought and use that.
