'The Fact Sheet...'
PostedMarch 16, 2014
I received our new organic sheets from Gaiam two weeks ago. I feel I can offer a couple thoughts after washing them for a third time and sleeping in them nightly. After a year enjoying the ‘nap’ of luxury enveloped in bamboo sheets these will take a little getting used to.
I’m hoping we’ll have plenty of time to do that. The bamboo sheets started shredding after one year of regular use!
Rest assured there are many things to like about these sheets, foremost among them is the fact that they’re organic. This trumps all else for me. Second, the color “Rattan” is stunning. It’s nothing like the individual photograph suggests: a bright buttercup yellow/gold. They’re more of a rich, golden bronze: much closer to the photograph of the pillow/sheet stack.
Insofar as the finish of the sheet is concerned, they definitely have more of a “percale” feeling than a high thread count sheet. I can overcome this though because they’re not bathed in chemicals and the cotton is grown sans insecticides, herbicides and fungicides. Also, they did soften up slightly after the second wash. The stiffer quality makes the sheets more prone to wrinkling, so you may not want to purchase these for a guest bedroom unless you are prepared to iron them, which I wouldn’t dream of doing!
The one thing that concerns me is that the specifications advertise that the fitted sheet is sized for a 17” mattress. Ours is 14” and it just fits. Any shrinkage and we are ‘sheet’ out-a-luck! Also, the top sheet is short for my taste. I pull the top sheet just over the top of the mattress (about 3”) and all that’s left to tuck at the bottom is about 3”. Again, any shrinkage and...well, you get the picture.
Lastly, I have a complaint about the extra “Sateen Pillowcases (2)” set that one one would assume would be a close match for the sheet set. At $50 for the set I expected better. The set is NOT the same size (longer), texture (not as smooth as the sheets), and worse – not the same color (more of a terra-cotta than golden bronze)! I understand dye lots but these pillow cases don’t appear to even have been made in the same factory. This disappointed me but it’s not like there’s an upside in returning them. Where else am I going to go to find something like this?
Bottom line: I won’t lose sleep over any of these minor issues; that is unless the sheets shrink and I can’t sleep on them!

Our queen size mattress  is 14”deep  and the fitted sheet is a tight fit. Any shrinkage and we are ‘sheet’ out-a-luck!
